The 8th Scottish Sports Development Conference reached a successful conclusion on Tuesday 28 April, with Polar Explorer Craig Mathieson placing the final piece of the Jigsaw.

It was cutting-edge, relevant and challenging with a combination of dynamic keynote speakers and thought-provoking workshops.

Sport does not operate in isolation but is part of the jigsaw that includes business and the wider community.  The 2015 Conference, supported by sportscotland, examined how these other pieces can inform and support sports development. It also looked at building club capacity to ensure sustainability of sport provision.

First-class keynote speakers for the 2015 Conference included:

  • Stewart Harris - Chief Executive, sportscotland
  • Rt Hon Henry McLeish - former First Minister of Scotland
  • Barbara Slater OBE  – Director of BBC Sport and ex-Olympic gymnast
  • David Williamson – Research Manager, sportscotland
  • Charlie Flynn - Commonwealth Games Boxing Gold medal winner
  • Mel Young - President and co-Founder and President of the Homeless World Cup
  • Viorel Etko – Scotland’s first wrestling medal winner since 1994
  • Craig Mathieson – Polar Explorer

At Building the Jigsaw – Growing Capacity delegates learned first-hand about successes in coaching, clubs/community ownership, volunteering, participation, health and well-being as well as a host of other topics.

New elements of the programme in the form of café style discussions provided increased time for debate and reflection on key topics.

The Scottish Sports Development Conference welcomed delegates from all levels of the profession – grassroots sports development officers and senior managers, from local authorities, third sector organisations and national governing bodies.

Thanks to the generosity of the delegates, over £700.00 (excluding Gift Aid) was raised in support of Aberlour – Scotland’s Children’s Charity.

Photographs from the conference will be available to view here soon.
